Your Guide to Cultural Events and Organizations in Central Ohio

What is RSS?

RSS allows you to receive new events that we have added to ColumbusArts.com. For example, you can receive updates on when your favorite band is playing or when an artist you like is having an exhibition.

RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication' and it allows you to stay up to date easily by having the content delivered directly to you. It is a little bit like the old-fashioned ticker-tape news wire machines.

Before you start

To use RSS, first you need an RSS reader (also called a feed aggregator or a news reader). This is a piece of software that checks RSS feeds and lets you read the items that interest you.

Generally speaking, there are two types of RSS readers:

  • Online versions – These are websites that allow you to log in and view the RSS feeds.
  • Computer desktop versions – These are available through your internet browser or the program you use to read and send email. Usually you have to download these to your computer before you begin. They gather RSS feed information and bring it directly to your computer.

Below are some links to different RSS readers. There are many different ones, and you will need one that works on your computer.

Subscribing to RSS

Once you have an RSS reader, you can subscribe to an RSS feed of events from ColumbusArts.com.

To subscribe to an RSS feed, follow these steps:

  1. Browse or do a search to find the events that interest you. For example, if you want to receive regular information on museum events, you can do a search with 'museum'.
  2. At the top of the search results you will see 'Subscribe to this search' and an RSS link. Click on the RSS link.
  3. You will see a page of programming code. Copy the one line of text that appears in your browser's 'address' field at the top of your screen. That one line of text is called the URL. It will start with 'http://'.
  4. Paste that URL into your RSS reader. Now you will receive an RSS feed from ColumbusArts.

Using RSS on your site

If you operate your own website, you can use RSS feeds from ColumbusArts.com to display our events information. For example, if you have a website for people who love art, you might want to display the upcoming art exhibits in Columbus.

We encourage people to use the RSS feeds available on ColumbusArts.com. We require that you credit the source to www.columbusarts.com.
